Die diesjährige Venedig-Biennale, die am 23. April eröffnen soll, steht unter dem Titel "The Milk of Dreams" - ein Verweis auf eine Publikation der surrealistischen Künstlerin Leonora Carrington (1917-2011). Für die Hauptausstellung, die in den Giardini, der ehemaligen Schiffswerft Arsenale und im Außenraum stattfinden wird, hat Kuratorin Cecilia Alemani insgesamt 213 Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus 58 Ländern eingeladen. Wie heute auf einer Online-Pressekonferenz bekanntgegeben wurde, sind 180 der Teilnehmenden zum ersten Mal dabei, insgesamt sollen rund 1400 Objekte gezeigt werden, davon 80 Neuproduktionen.
Dabei sind unter anderem etablierte Positionen wie Amy Sillmann, Carol Rama, Nan Goldin, Barbara Kruger, Rosemarie Trockel und Agnes Denes, aber auch jüngere Künstlerinnen und Künstler wie die südkoreanische Bildhauerin Mire Lee, der chinesische Filmemacher Zheng Bo, die Gewinnerin des Preises der Nationalgalerie 2021 Sandra Mujinga, die US-Medienkünstlerin Sondra Perry oder der argentinische Künstler Gabriel Chaile. Außerdem werden unter anderem Werke von Cristina Quarles, Paula Rego, Sable Elyse Smith, Alexandra Pirici, Delcy Morelos, Frantz Zephirin, Gertrude Arndt, Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller und James Graverol in der Hauptausstellung zu sehen sein. Während in der Geschichte der Biennale meist männliche Künstler die Ausstellung dominierten, sind diesmal mehrheitlich Künstlerinnen auf der Liste zu finden, dazu mehrere Personen, die sich nicht im traditionellen binären Gechlechtersystem sehen.
Dass viele der Ausgestellten bereits verstorben sind, erklärt sich mit Alemanis Ansatz, kleine "Geschichtskapseln" mit historischen Positionen in ihre Schau zu integrieren. "Als Zeitkapseln konzipiert werden diese shows within the show zusätzliche Werkzeuge für Untersuchungen und Introspektion bieten", heißt es im kuratorischen Konzept. "Sie weben ein Netz aus Referenzen und Echos, das die Kunstwerke der Vergangenheit mit den zeitgenössischen Positionen in ihrer Umgebung verbindet."
Reflektion des "Aufruhrs unserer Zeit"
Laut Alemani soll "The Milk of Dreams" keine Ausstellung über die Pandemie sein, sie reflektiere aber zwangsläufig "den Aufruhr unserer Zeit". In einem Statement der Biennale heißt es: "In Zeiten wie diesen – wie die Geschichte der Venedig-Biennale deutlich zeigt – können uns Kunst und Künstler dabei helfen, neue Modelle des Zusammenlebens und endlose neue Möglichkeiten der Transformation zu imaginieren."
Während sich das letzte Biennale-Konzept "May You Live in Interesting Times" von Ralph Rugoff vor allem auf politische Ausnahmezustände in der irdischen Wirklichkeit bezog, klingt "The Milk of Dreams" nach jetzigem Stand nach einer kosmischen Multispezies-Erzählung à la Donna Haraway, die in der zeitgenössischen Kunst gerade oft zu finden ist. Aufgerufen werden drängende Themen wie Klimakrise, koloniales Erbe, technischen Fortschritt und hybride Identitäten, das ganze bewegt sich jedoch auch in spirituellen Sphären, die manche für eine nötige Abkehr von der kapitalistischen Wachstumsideologie und andere für eskapistisch und kitschgefährdet halten.
Mit dem Verweis auf die Fantastik behält sich Cecilia Alemanis Ausstellungskonzept vor, die Kunst in ihrem eigenen Universum spielen zu lassen. Anders als das Biennale-Konzept "Viva, Arte, Viva" von 2017 enthält "The Milk of Dreams" aber auch den Anspruch, den Kanon herauszufordern und konkrete politische Bezüge zu schaffen. Wie viele Malerinnen des 20. Jahrhunderts stand Namensgeberin Leonora Carrington Zeit ihres Lebens im Schatten ihrer männlichen Kollegen, in den 1970er-Jahren war sie außerdem Teil des Women's Liberation Movement in Mexiko. Auch Positionen wie die afroamerikanische Bildhauerin Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller (1877-1968), die Autorin und Künstlerin Djuna Barnes (1892-1982) und die Bauhaus-Schülerinnen Marianne Brandt (1892-1983) und Gertrude Arndt (1903-2000) deuten darauf hin, dass es darum gehen wird, feministische Schwerpunkte zu setzen und übersehene Protagonistinnen der Kunstgeschichte ins Rampenlicht der Biennale zu holen.
