Glanz und Ele ... ganz der Nachkriegsmoderne liegen in Marl überall dicht an dicht. Die Retortenstadt atmet den Geist der Utopie, wohlgemerkt aber jenen einer nie verwirklichten. Wer das architektonisch so spektakuläre Rathaus (4) staunend umrundet, kann auch einen kurzen Abstecher zum Grimme-Institut (1) wagen, wo Fernsehen und Au fklärung zusammenfinden. Quasi im Rathaus selbst ist der Glaskasten zu Hause, das Skulpturenmuseum Marl (3). Komplett mit Glas eingefasst, ist das Haus zusätzlich noch mit mehr als 70 Außenarbeiten umgeben.
In Marl, the glory and mystery or misery of post-War Modernism are to be seen side by side wherever you look. The test-tube town breathes the spirit of utopia, albeit one that was never realized. Anyone walking round the spectacular Rathaus (4) and gazing at it in sheer astonishment could also pop over to the Grimme-Institut (1), where TV and enlightenment go hand in hand. The city hall itself is also home to the glass cube that is Skulpturenmuseum Marl (3). The latter is completely covered in glass and surrounded additionally by over 70 outdoor pieces.
Werke von Arp bis Zadkine stehen im öffentlichen Raum um das Rathaus und den künstlich angelegten City-See. Je näher man beim Flanieren dem eigentlichen Glaskasten kommt, umso dichter wird der Ring der Skulpturen. Das Spektrum der Sammlung mit Schwerpunkt klassischer Moderne reicht von Auguste Rodin und Constantin Meunier über Max Ernst und Alberto Giacometti bis hin zu jüngerer Medienkunst. Für eine spektakuläre Großskulptur muss man allerdings die Seen-Platte hinter sich lassen und das Theater aufsuchen. Vor diesem liegt "La Tortuga" (2) – so der Titel einer großen Raumplastik von Wolf Vostell. Eine alte Dampflokomotive liegt auf dem Rücken – wie eine Schildkröte, auf Spanisch tortuga. Es ist eine rostige alte Güterzuglokomotive der Baureihe 52, mit der die Deutsche Reichsbahn Material an die Front, aber auch Menschen in Konzentrationslager brachte. Ein Sinnbild für das Ende des Maschinenzeitalters wie für den Untergang der Menschlichkeit. Aus dem Inneren des Tenders dringen Stimmen von Zeitzeugen nach außen.
Pieces from Arp to Zadkine are located in the public space round the city hall and the artifi cial City Lake. The closer you get to the glass cube proper, the denser the ring of sculptures gets. The collection focuses on classic Modernism and ranges from Auguste Rodin and Constantin Meunier through Max Ernst and Alberto Giacometti to more recent media art. You need to put the lake behind you and head along less romantic paths to the theater to see a truly spectacular large sculpture. Because outside it stands "La Tortuga" (2) — a large piece by Wolf Vostell. An old steam engine lies on its back, like a tortoise, tortuga in Spanish. It is a rusty old Series 52 freight locomotive that Deutsche Reichsbahn used to transport material to the battle front line and people to the concentration camps. A symbol for the end of the Machine Age and for the end of a sense of humanity. From inside the tender the voices of contemporary witnesses to the horrors can be heard.

Recklinghausen ist eine klassische Ringstadt. Wer von der Kunsthalle Recklinghausen (6) kommt – sie wurde 1950 in einem ehemaligen Hochbunker gegenüber vom Hauptbahnhof eröffnet und zeigt unter anderem regelmäßig die Ausstellungen zum Kunstpreis junger westen –, kann sich schon einmal verlaufen in den verwinkelten Straßen der Altstadt. Neuer Hotspot ist das unweit des sehenswerten Ikonen-Museums am zentralen Kirchplatz angesiedelte private Museum Jerke. Es ist polnischer Kunst des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts gewidmet und wartet mit einer beeindruckenden Sammlung auf. Für die Gastronomie ist TV-Koch Matthias Ruta verantwortlich, der in der Art Lounge eine sehr urbane Crossover-Küche anbietet. Für eine gute Weinund Cocktailbar sollte man dann den Ring wieder verlassen. Das Goldstück liegt auf halbem Weg zum Grünen Hügel, der Heimstätte der berühmten
Ruhrfestspiele (5).
Recklinghausen is a classical city built in rays radiating out from a central ring. Anyone walking from the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen (6) (it opened in 1950 in a former above-ground bunker opposite the railway station) into the city may easily get lost in the twisting lanes in the old town. The new hot spot is not far from the Ikonen-Museum, with its interesting collections: namely the private Museum Jerke on the central Kirchplatz. It focuses on Polish 20th and 21st century art and is home to an impressive collection. The restaurant is run by TV chef Matthias Ruta, who dishes up a very urban crossover cuisine in the Art Lounge. You need to step outside the central downtown ring to fi nd a good wine or cocktail bar. Goldstück is halfway to Grüner Hügel, the home of the famous Ruhrfestspiele (5).

Einen romantischen Spaziergang durch den mal postindustriell, mal idyllischen Ballungsraum ermöglicht immer wieder der Rhein-Herne-Kanal. Etwa, wenn man sich von der traditionsreichen Off -Kunst-Location Unser Fritz (7) – wo schon seit den 60er-Jahren weniger Maloche und mehr Malen und Machen angesagt ist – über die Brücke in den Stadtteil Crange bewegt. Wenn dort dann auch noch Kirmes herrscht, eines der größten Volksfeste Deutschlands, dann lernt man das Ruhrgebiet wirklich kennen.
A romantic walk down the Rhine-Herne Canal off ers a view of a conurbation that is a mix of post-industrial and idyllic scenery. For example, if one walks from the long-standing fringe art location Unser Fritz (7) (where since the 60s the emphasis has been on painting and making and less on mining) over the bridge to the district Crange. If it is time for the Kirmes fair, one of the largest beerfests in Germany, then you really get to know the Ruhr region.

In Ehrenfeld trifft man Bochums Kreative. Schauspieler, Regisseure, Bühnenbildner, denn das Schauspielhaus (15) ist das gravitätische Zentrum, dazu allerlei Studierende und Projektexperten. Den Koffein-Kick nehmen sie alle gerne bei Fräulein Coffea, dem schicken Café der Oberheitmann Schwestern mit dem urbanen Freisitz. Gute Quiche auch. In der graugruseligen U-Bahn-Station "Schauspielhaus" findet sich im umgewandelten Ladenlokal der Kunstraum-Unten von Gisbert Danberg. Akademie-Meisterschüler aus Münster und Düsseldorf zeigen hier oft ortsbezogene kleine Schauen. Der Theatertanker Schauspielhaus Bochum lebt vom Zadek-, Peymann- und Leander-Haußmann-Mythos und freut sich darauf, dass Johan Simons ab 2018 das Haus als Intendant bespielen wird. Die beste Pizza der Stadt gibt es auf weniger als zehn Quadratmetern bei Pizza am – im Sommer stets trubeligen – Hans-Ehrenberg-Platz. Der beste Ort für Cocktail, Absacker und Subkultur ist die vereinsverwaltete Goldkante. Die Szene trinkt Doppelwacholder aus Hagen-Haspe, die anderen Gin Tonic und immer Fiege Pils.
Ehrenfeld is where Bochum's creative minds meet. Actors, directors, stage-set designers the Schauspielhaus (15) is the real magnet, not to mention any number of students and project experts. They all enjoy getting their caffeine blast at Fräulein Coffea, the swish café run by the Oberheitmann sisters, with a superb outside area and great quiche. The grey spooky "Schauspielhaus" subway stop is the location of Kunstraum-Unten, a converted store run by Gisbert Danberg. Students from the master classes in the Münster and Düsseldorf academies often present small site-specific shows here. The massive Bochum Schauspielhaus theater lives from the myth of past directors Zadek, Peymann and Leander Haussmann, and is looking forward to new director Johan Simons beginning in 2018. The best pizza in town is to be found in the less than ten square-meter large Pizza on Hans-Ehrenberg-Platz which really buzzes in summer and the best place for a cocktail, sundowner, and subculture is the association-run Goldkante. The incrowd drinks Doppelwacholder by Hagen-Haspe, the others Gin & Tonics and of course Fiege Pils.

Am Stadtpark mit herrlichem altem Baumbestand liegt das Kunstmuseum Bochum (13). Nur wer suchet, der findet die einbetonierten Reste der Olympia-Theke von Wolf Vostell draußen an der Ecke, auffälliger schon die kugelige Stahlplastik "La Grande Ruota Ferro Spezzato" von Giuseppe Spagnulo gegenüber. Von dort folgt man der Fußgängerzone, läuft am Rathaus vorbei und findet das Rottstraßenviertel, das trotz unmittelbarer Citynähe noch sehr authentisch wirkt, mit Kiosk, China-Imbiss und ein bisschen Halbwelt. Gutes Essen und guten Wein gibt es im Neuland, das auch mit der dahinter liegenden adhoc-Galerie Doppel-Kunstvernissagen durchführt. Adhoc ist eigentlich nur eine Doppelgarage die aber mit meist sechs Künstlern im Jahr bespielt wird. Nebenan unter dem Bahndamm gibt es eines der besten Off -Theater der Region mit dem Rottstr5-Team (11), professionelle Schauspieler und Regisseure, oft vom Schauspielhaus oder der Folkwang Universität. Einige Meter weiter verfügt der Maler Stephan Geisler über großzügige Atelierräume. Ist es Freitag, lockt dann schon der vielleicht attraktivste Abendmarkt des Reviers, der Moltkemarkt. Hier treffen die Kartoffeln kaufenden Rentner des Viertels auf akademische Antipasti-Freunde mit trockenem Weißwein und freuen sich gemeinsam auf das Wochenende. Das tobt natürlich schon großflächig im Bermuda3eck (14) – bis in die Puppen.
The Stadtpark is home to a mass of marvelous old trees and also to Kunstmuseum Bochum (13). You find the remains of the Olympia bar-top created by Wolf Vostell set into the concrete of one outside corner, whereas Giuseppe Spagnulo's spherical steel sculpture "La Grande Ruota Ferro Spezzato" opposite is more noticeable. From there you follow the pedestrian zone, walk past the city hall and find yourself in the Rottstrasse district, which for all its proximity to downtown is still pretty much a mining-town strip. That said, Neuland off ers good food and good wine, and doubles down with the adhoc-Galerie behind for art exhibition previews. Adhoc is actually just a double carport that tends to display the works of six artists a year. Next to it, beneath the railway tracks, is the best fringe theater in the region: the Rottstr5 team (11), boasting professional actors and directors, often from the Schauspielhaus or the Folkwang University. A few meters further on, painter Stephan Geisler fills spacious studio rooms. If it's Friday then you're in luck as next is what is probably the best night market in town, the Moltkemarkt. Here, the local pensioners buying their vegetables rub shoulders with academic antipasti fans and together welcome in the weekend. The welcoming continues well into the wee hours at the Bermuda3eck (14).

Für den Spaziergänger sind in Witten Kunst und Kultur fein sortiert. Das Märkische Museum (20) mit seiner fabelhaften Sammlung des deutschen Informel ist das Zentrum des Kulturforums Witten: ein architektonisch sehenswertes Ensemble aus Musikschule, Bibliothek, Stadtarchiv und Saalbau. Von dort sind es nur ein paar Gehminuten in die Innenstadt, wobei man das riesige Einkaufszentrum links passiert, um in die turbu lente Wiesenstraße (19) zu gelangen. Studenten hängen hier gerne ab, vor allem in den direkt nebeneinander liegenden Etablissements Knut's, Klimbim und […]Raum. Je nachdem, ob es mehr nach Pils, Kaffee und Kuchen oder Kommunikation gelüstet, wird man hier auf Gleichgesinnte treffen.
In Witten, art and culture are carefully arranged for pedestrians. Märkisches Museum (20) with its marvelous collection of German abstract art is the heart of Witten’s Kulturforum: an architecturally striking albeit disparate ensemble of music college, library, municipal archive, and hall. From there, downtown proper is but a few minutes' walk: pass the huge shopping mall on the left and head for the vibrant Wiesenstrasse (19), where the students like to hang out.
