Das Kunstquartier Hagen (2) verbindet das Osthaus Museum mit dem 2009 neu gebauten Emil Schumacher Museum. In Letzterem werden auf 1200 Quadratmetern Schumachers gestische Abstraktionen gezeigt. Das sanierte Osthaus Museum widmet sich vor allem der klassischen Moderne und dem deutschen Expressionismus, zeigt aber auch zeitgenössische Ausstellungen. Gut gelungen ist der architektonische Bezug des Neubaus zu den historischen Gebäuden, zu denen auch das spätklassizistische Landgericht und die neugotische Pfarrkirche zu zählen sind. Durch die Elberfelder Straße bummelt man dann in Richtung Theater (1), das als Mehrspartenhaus ein überregionaler Anziehungspunkt ist. Jährlich rund 175 000 Besucher nehmen die Angebote in den Sparten Musiktheater, Ballett, Schauspiel, Kinder- und Jugendtheater sowie die Konzerte des Philharmonischen Orchesters Hagen wahr. Bemerkenswert sind die Frauenstatuen von Bildhauerin Milly Steger über dem Portal. Die eigentlich recht züchtige Nacktheit der Damen erregte noch 1911 bei der Eröffnung Unmut. Abends sollte man in Hagen unbedingt Hohoffs The Golden Cage besuchen, eine Bar der Superlative mit New-York-Thema in einem gigantischen alten Industriebau. Im Kesselhaus gibt es State-of-the-Art-Beef und schickste Cocktails im Art-déco Ambiente, ein neuer Wallfahrtsort der Fleisch- und Barkultur.
The Kunstquartier Hagen (2) links the Osthaus Museum with the Emil Schumacher Museum, built in 2009. The latter provides 1200 square meters of exhibition space for Schumacher's wildly abstract canvases. Post-refurbishment, the Osthaus Museum is dedicated mainly to classical Modernism and German Expressionism, but also hosts contemporary exhibitions every now and again. The new build references the architecture of the historical buildings superbly—they include the Late Classicist District Court and the neo-Gothic parish church. Wander down Elberfelder Strasse toward the Theater (1), which is a magnet for the entire region, hosting various forms of theater performances. Each year, around 175 000 visitors are attracted by the musical theater, ballet, children’s programs, and the concerts by Hagen Philharmonic Orchestra. The eye is immediately caught by the statutes of women above the portal, courtesy of female sculptor Milly Steger. In 1911, when the building opened, the women's nudity caused quite a stir. When spending an evening in Hagen, Hohoff's The Golden Cage is certainly worth visiting: a superb bar themed on New York in a gigantic old industrial building. In the boiler house enjoy state of-the-art beef and smooth cocktails in an Art Deco ambience—for all those who love meat and bars.

Es geht schon am Hauptbahnhof los mit einem Streit. Ist Fußball interessant? Braucht er ein Museum? Nein oder rein. Dann geht es durch die Museumsgasse und den Platz von Amiens in das quirlige Brückstraßenviertel, das der scheidende Intendant des Konzerthauses (10), Benedikt Stampa, mal mit den multikulturellen Stadtteilen des hippen London verglichen hat. Hoch gegriffen? Sein Konzerthaus-Programm hat dem aber alle Ehre gemacht und das Haus auch für avancierten Pop geöffnet. Unweit dieses "offiziellen" Musiktempels ist auch das Mekka des Jazz beheimatet. In einem alten Kino residiert das Domicil (9), einer der führenden Jazzclubs weltweit. Auch wenn gerade kein Konzert stattfindet, lohnt sich hier ein Drink an der Theke. Der junge hippe Dortmunder liebt es seit Neuestem wieder minimal, wofür das Lokal Zum Schlips steht. Das ist wirklich einfach: zwei Öffnungstage, Dienstag und Samstag, drei Getränke, Stößchen, Wacholder Tonic und Wasser. Dazu noch einige Schnäpse der Dortmunder Brennerei Krämer, darunter der Kräuterlikör "August mit dem Schlips" – daher der Name. Shoppen geht man in der Gegend rund um die Kleppingstraße: Fashion Lindner führt hier Marken wie Acne Studios, Self Portrait oder 3.1 Phillip Lim. Direkt um die Ecke ist der Elkedag-Shop für schicke Taschen aus alten Turnmatten oder Markisen und andere Accessoires. Für den Abend ist das Theater immer eine gute Wahl: Intendant Kay Voges hat das Schauspiel zu einer der interessantesten Bühnen Deutschlands gemacht. Für gastronomische und kulinarische Abenteuer empfiehlt sich dann der Weg ins Kreuzviertel (14). Die U-Bahn-Haltestelle "Saarlandstraße" ist dafür ein guter Startpunkt. Und dann hinein in die Straßen rund um Neuer Graben, Kreuz- und Lindemannstraße. Bloß nicht mit dem Auto! Parkplätze sind alle schon weg. Schöne Anlaufstellen: der Weinladen Cabernet & Co und Luups.
Things start at the main railway station—with conflict. Does one need a museum for soccer? No. Yes. Enter. Then down Museumsgasse and across von Amiens square into the vibrant Brückstrasse district, which Benedikt Stampa, now the retiring Artistic Director of Konzerthaus (10), once compared to the best multicultural districts in swinging London. An exaggeration? His Konzerthaus program showed that he put his money where his mouth was and even opened the building up for cutting-edge pop. You'll come across the mecca of jazz not far from this "official" music: the Domicil (9), one of the world's leading jazz clubs, resides in an old movie theater. Even when there isn't a concert on, a drink at the bar is worthwhile. Young Dortmund hipsters have of late preferred things to be minimalist, which is what the Zum Schlips bar is all about. It’s really simple: two days a week, Tuesdays and Saturdays, three drinks, a tall glass of beer, Wacholder Tonic, and mineral water. Add a few schnapps from Dortmund's Krämer distillery, including herb schnapps "August mit dem Schlips." For good shopping, check out the district round Kleppingstrasse: Fashion Lindner has brands such as Acne Studios, Self Portrait, or 3.1 Phillip Lim. Round the corner for Elkedag Shop, featuring sleek bags (made from old sports mats or awnings) and other accessories. The theater is a good choice for the evening: Under director Kay Voges, it has become one the most interesting and innovative in Germany. For a culinary adventure in the evening, head for the Kreuzviertel district (14). A good starting point: alight at the "Saarlandstraße" subway station. And into one of the streets round Neuer Graben, Kreuzstrasse, and Lindemannstrasse. Great places to visit: the Cabernet & Co wine store and Luups.

Kaum zu übersehen ist vom Bahnhof aus das Dortmunder U (8): der zentrale Kunstort der Stadt. Auf den großen Videoleinwänden außen am Turm sind immer frische visuelle Ideen zu bewundern. Innen gibt es unglaublich viel zu entdecken, spannende Ausstellungen hält stets der Hartware MedienKunstVerein bereit. Auch das Museum Ostwall mit seinen fundierten und originellen Ausstellungen zur Kunst des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts hat hier eine neue Heimat gefunden. Dazu kommt direkt nebenan der Dortmunder Kunstverein mit ebenfalls sehr engagiertem, jungem Programm. Kulinarisch überzeugt in der Nähe sowohl der Salat-Shop Kraut & Rüben als auch ein paar Meter weiter der Kiosk der neuen Dortmunder Bergmann-Brauerei (12): ein kultiger Ort. Von hier aus kann man urban entlang der Brinkhoffstraße den Weg in den Norden der Innenstadt nehmen – wie so oft im Ruhrgebiet zerschneidet die Bahnlinie die Stadt, im Norden geht es stets etwas kerniger zu. Davon ist im Sissikingkong aber noch nicht so viel zu merken: gepflegter Genuss zwischen Bistro und Kreativkneipe, zwischen Literatur- und Musikprogramm. Lauter ist es im Subrosa, wo Schnaps, Bier, Punk und Fußball gefeiert werden, gelegentlich ist auch direkt gegenüber der Rekorder geöffnet, eine charmante Kleingastronomie ohne vordergründig kommerzielle Absichten oder professionelles Gehabe. Von dort ist es nicht mehr weit zum Dortmunder Hafen, wo die Tyde Studios (6) einen fabelhaften Anlaufpunkt zwischen Party, Konzert, Slam und Health-Verpflegung bieten, mit Yoga und Liegestühlen am Wasser. Ein schönes Programmkino ist auch nicht weit: Das Roxy liegt an der Münsterstraße in der rauen Nordstadt.
Standing at the railway station, it's hard not to see the Dortmunder U (8) the city's central art space and (ongoing) subject of much controversy. The large outdoor video-screens on the tower always feature new and stunning visual ideas. Inside there’s masses to discover, whereby the most exciting exhibitions tend to be in the Hartware MedienKunstVerein. Museum Ostwall with its well-founded and original exhibitions on the art of the 20th and 21st centuries has also found a new home here. Right next door is the Dortmunder Kunstverein which similarly has a very active, young program. For the hungry and thirsty, there's the nearby Kraut & Rüben salad shop and a few meters further the Bergmann-Kiosk for Dortmund's new brewery (12) — pretty much cult. From here, go for an urban walk down Brinkhoffstrasse to the northern part of downtown—as so often in the Ruhr region, the rail tracks bisect the city and the north of town is always a little rougher. Not that you'll notice much of that in Sissikingkong: tasteful enjoyment in the bistrocum-creative bar, with a literature and a music program. Things are louder and more joyful in Subrosa, where schnapps, beer, Punk, and soccer get celebrated, and occasionally directly opposite the Rekorder opens its doors, a charming tiny restaurant with no in-your-face commercial intentions or professional sales pitches. From there, Dortmund’s port is a stone's throw away, where Tyde Studios (6) offers a fabulous place for a mix of parties, concerts, slams, and yoga, with outdoor seating at the water side. And don't miss the great movie theater Roxy which is located on Münsterstrasse in the rough Nordstadt-area.

Die heimelige Innenstadt lässt nicht unbedingt erahnen, was sich für ein besonderer Kunstort in dieser Stadt versteckt. Das Zentrum für Internationale Lichtkunst (17) ist weltweit das einzige Museum, das sich ausschließlich dieser Gattung widmet. Die Sammlung ist entsprechend außergewöhnlich. Sie befindet sich im Gebäude der ehemaligen Lindenbrauerei, viele Installationen sind in unterirdischen Gängen untergebracht, in Kühlräumen und Gärkellern. Dabei sind unter anderen Christian Boltanski, Olafur Eliasson, Rebecca Horn, Joseph Kosuth, Mischa Kuball, Mario Merz, François Morellet, teils mit spektakulären Werken. So ist seit 2009 eine gewaltige Camera obscura von James Turrell Teil der ständigen Ausstellung: "Third Breath" besteht aus zwei Räumen, die dem Besucher fantastische Perspektiven eröffnen. Nebenan betreibt der Lindenbrauerei Kulturverein noch eine Gastronomie
und Spielstätte für Konzerte und Kleinkunst. Geht man durch die City Richtung Bahnhof, so begegnet einem das Arthaus:Nowodworski (18). Ein Kunstort in einem alten Fachwerkhaus, der sich besonders der experimentellen Fotografie und kinetischer Kunst widmet. Unmittelbar gegenüber ist das Café Moller, das in seinem Garten über eine sehr hübsche, begrünte Terrasse verfügt.
The cozy downtown does not immediately indicate that the city is home to a very special art venue. The Center for International Light Art (17) is the world's only museum to be dedicated exclusively to this genre. Its building belonged to a former brewery and many installations are to be found in underground passageways, cold rooms, and fermenting cellars. They include pieces by Christian Boltanski, Olafur Eliasson, Rebecca Horn, Joseph Kosuth, Mischa Kuball, Mario Merz and François Morellet. Since 2009, a massive camera obscura by James Turrell is part of the permanent exhibition: "Third Breath" consists of two rooms that offer visitors incredible perspectives. Next door, the Lindenbrauerei Kulturverein runs a restaurant and hosts concerts and arts and crafts events. If you walk through the city toward the railway station you will encounter the Arthaus:Nowodworski (18). This art space is devoted primarily to experimental photography and kinetic art. Directly next door: café Moller with a wonderful garden terrace.
